BICSI: A Telecommunications Association
About BICSI. This association was formed in the early 1970s by a group of people who worked
for the Bell operating companies. Each Bell company had a department which
they called their "Building Industry Consulting Service", a
service to the building industry by the phone company which designed telecommunication
wiring systems for new and existing commercial properties.
In the early 1990's, BICSI decided to drop the "Building
Industry Consulting Services, International" and simply refer to
itself as "BICSI: A Telecommunications Association". Today,
BICSI is the leading association working to bring high standards to the
cabling industry. Their programs include the coveted RCCD certification
and other industry education efforts.
The BICSI's
mission is:

Leading the telecommunications industry in the enhancement of quality
services and methods around the globe by providing excellent education,
promoting skill sharing, and assessing knowledge with professional registration
programs.
BICSI's RCDD is a designation for individuals who demonstrate
expertise in the design, integration, and implementation of telecommunications
(voice, data, video, audio, and other low-voltage control) transport systems
and their related infrastructure components.
An RCDD is responsible for the detailed design of new systems
and/or the integration of a design into an existing system. These systems
can include combinations of voice, data, video, audio, and low-voltage
control. The formats can be digital and/or analog transmissions, as well
as conversions of all formats into digital. The designs can include the
use of telecommunications copper cabling, optical fiber cabling, and wireless
(radio or optical). This designation is intended for those professionals
who are actively involved in network infrastructure design and are working
directly with architects, engineers, network managers, or other designers/Information
Systems (IS) professionals. Although it is not precluded, the RCDD designation
is not generally intended for those individuals working in direct sales,
procurement, telephone support (i.e., "help desk"), or with
responsibility for the installation of the project materials.
